Why LED and nothing else
Anything mounted permanently on a roof edge has to survive being there. Traditional bulbs were built around a season, not a decade. LEDs run cool, draw little power and do not have a filament to break, which is the whole reason a permanent system is possible. You do not have to follow the technical side to make a good decision. But it is worth knowing what you are buying, since the detail in the answer says a lot. The people who explain it plainly are

What the channel does
The LEDs sit inside a color matched aluminum channel. That channel does two things at once: conceal and direct. It gets matched to the color of your trim or fascia before it goes up, which is why a good install is invisible at noon and obvious at nine.
Individual diodes, not a strip
The lights are addressed one at a time, which is where the effects come from. Without individual control you get one color across every foot of the run. With it you get alternating colors, movement and transitions. Most nights the fancy part goes unused, and that is fine.Look at somebody's finished work in the sun, since a dark sky covers a multitude of shortcuts.
Power, control and the parts you do not see
The parts you never look at are where the wire runs, how it is powered and what talks to your phone. How that wiring is routed says more about the crew than the lights do. Ask how the wiring is concealed before the install, not after.
Living with permanent hardware
The upside of never taking it down comes with an obligation: it has to be installed well the first time. A system put up carefully asks very little of you. A rushed one announces itself in daylight, which is exactly what you were paying to avoid. That is why the crew matters as much as the product.
Weather is what the hardware is up against
Nothing about leaving it up is theoretical once August arrives. Summer heat builds up along a sunlit fascia, and heat is what shortens the life of most electronics. Humidity is constant here, which puts the seals and the connections under real load. The failure points are connections, not diodes.
The control nobody mentions
The output is not one level. Full brightness is a holiday setting, and it is far more light than an ordinary evening wants. The everyday level is usually modest, and that is the setting doing the actual work.
Getting a design
Reading about the hardware is not the same as seeing it on your roofline. What actually answers the question is a plan for your own roofline. EverCrest Lighting installs permanent LED lighting for residential and commercial properties across Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, out of Greenville. Consultations are free.
