Event lighting is temporary on purpose
Most outdoor lighting is an installation. Event lighting is the opposite. A wedding, a milestone birthday, a corporate evening, a reception: the lighting exists for a single evening. That changes the whole approach, because there is no version of this you fix next weekend.Which changes the working relationship. An installation is judged over years. An event is judged once, in one evening. So the planning front loads, the contingencies get discussed out loud,

The one thing you cannot negotiate
Permanent work has flexible scheduling. An event date is fixed. The lead time is longer than the work implies. A small display still requires the same sequence as a big one.
The unglamorous part
Indoor events have outlets. A back yard, a field, a venue lawn usually has power in the wrong place. Ask about how it is getting powered before the design conversation feels finished. A beautiful plan nobody can energize is not a plan. And whoever is handling the lighting should be told what else is happening in the space, because a band, a caterer and a photographer all have requirements that touch the same square footage.
Weather has a vote
An outdoor date carries weather risk. Ask early: what changes if it rains. Having an answer already agreed is the difference between an adjustment and a crisis.
Priorities
At an outdoor event the light is doing two things: making it look right and letting people move safely. Atmosphere comes from the canopy and the feature areas. Function covers paths, level changes and exits, and it only gets noticed when it is missing. Both need to be in the plan. Only one of them gets remembered fondly.
Working with the site
If the event is at a venue, the property has its own requirements. Access windows, what can be attached to what, whether anything can be staked into the ground, and when everything has to be gone are all set by the venue, not by you. Introduce them before the week of. It is free and it prevents the most.
Most people overestimate
The instinct with an event is more. Dark surroundings make everything read brighter, so a plan that seems thin in daylight is usually right. The spaces that people remember are almost always lit less than people expect, with warm light and real darkness between the lit areas. A designer who says you need less than you think is doing you a favor.
